We are proud to be launching our first 10-year whisky. Adventurous Spirit 10 Years Old is part of our Adventurous Spirit range. That means we will never make this whisky again.

 

Adventurous 10 Years Old is a medium-smoky whisky with gentle notes of sweet fruit.

Fragrance

Adventurous Spirit 10 Year Old whisky has a lovely aroma of peat smoke, emptied tobacco boxes and forgotten apple crates. It also has a fruitiness and freshness. A little water enhances the fruitiness and brings out a gently burned caramel flavour.  

Taste

The taste is intense and complex with a hint of smoke. The smoke is incredibly well integrated into the whisky, which you might call light- to medium-smoked. The tobacco notes recur in the taste, accompanied by light notes of sweet fruit - a little apple here, and a little pear there. The aftertaste is nutty and smoky, and only slightly dry. A little water brings out the fruitiness more and subdues the smokiness. 

Our first 10-year whisky.

This is our very first 10-year-old whisky, and we promise you it is the jewel in the crown of our finest casks. It is also just the fifth cask we ever filled. Now it is time for the world to taste it!

 

The whisky’s ten-year journey was a calm one. For the entire ten-year period it remained in the same cask - for the first seven years in a cold cellar at Ørbæk Bryggeri (where we started making whisky back in 2009), and the following three years in the old train engine shed in Nyborg, where Nyborg Destilleri is now located.

A world-class whisky

The cask we used for this whisky was originally a 500L sherry butt, which was used for storing oloroso sherry on the Iberian peninsula for at least 30 years. The cask then travelled to the island of Islay on the west coast of Scotland. At some point, the cask was converted into a 380L ‘puncheon’ before being filled with very smoky in one of Scotland’s most famous distilleries on Islay.

 

We do not know how long the cask resided in comfort in Scotland, but it was destined to travel all the way to Denmark. A Danish wine and spirit company was lucky enough to purchase both the cask and the whisky it contained. They brought it to Silkeborg, where they sold the whisky. Niels Rømer heard about the empty cask and asked if he could buy it. So the cask travelled from ‘Iberia’ to ‘Islay’ to the ‘Isle of Fionia’.

 

This is not a whisky we will be able to recreate. The cask is unique. Its history and the maturing of the whisky will be impossible to recreate.
